Why 980nm?

The Value of Understanding the Science

The first law of photochemistry states biologic effects of laser-tissue interaction can only transpire in the presence of a photo-receptor molecule or chromophore; a molecule capable of absorbing the photonic energy being emitted[1].  Generally speaking, the greater the absorption, the greater the interaction, and in the case of biologic soft tissue, the 980nm high absorption diode laser selectively targets WATER as water comprises > 70% of soft tissue.

Higher water absorption means more efficient and effective ablation of the prostate hence treatment times are dramatically reduced compared to alternative wavelengths.  Shorter treatment time means less collateral thermal effect on surrounding healthy tissue leading to faster recovery and less post-operative discomfort.  Finally safety is paramount as higher absorption in the target means less penetration and more control at the fiber-tissue interface, eliminating the concern of inadvertent interaction with healthy surrounding healthy tissue.

With high absorption in both water and hemoglobin this wavelength is optimized for performance resulting in optimal tissue ablation, durable coagulation and enhanced visibility.

Technological Innovation

A practical alternative, this 200 watt 980nm diode laser is manufactured in an energy efficient, compact and portable footprint which which runs on standard 110V electricity. The MP200 can also be a multi-discipline and cost-effective laser alternative for multiple surgical procedures and considering its portability, the unit can be easily transported between physical locations.

Using industry standard connections, the laser can be used with lateral/side fire fibers to minimize the learning curve transitioning from other laser platforms and contact fibers mimicking traditional TURP (Trans Urethral Resection of the Prostate) surgical techniques.
